Abstract

Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 is the latest version of the popular server application for virtualizing large numbers of client systems on the one large server. This means that the user workstations can be lower function and that overall management can be centralized and streamlined. New to Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 is support for 64-bit EM64T-based servers and 64-bit operating systems, such as Windows Server 2003 x64. 64-bit support means a larger number of users can be supported on the one server, as much as three times over the previous 32-bit version.

The X3 Architecture servers are a family of high performance IBM System x servers, with four processor sockets and support for up to 64 GB of memory and six high-speed PCI-X slots. The X3 family comprises of the flagship x3950 server with its XpandOnDemand capabilities to attach up to eight systems together to form a single 32-way complex, the x3850, with its rack-dense 3U configuration, and the x3800, which supports up to 12 internal SAS hot-swap drives for up to 3.6 TB of internal storage. All three servers include the IBM X3 chipset and memory bandwidth of up to 21 GBps.

This IBM Redpaper describes what's new in Version 4.0 of Presentation Server and explains how the 64-bit combination of hardware, operating system, and Citrix application supports a greater number of users than the 32-bit equivalent. We also explain the migration steps that are available to move you to 64-bit processing, complete with migration strategies that eliminate user downtime. Finally, we provide details on best practices on using Presentation Server.

This Redpaper is aimed at the reader who is already familiar with earlier versions of Presentation Server, but are new to 64-bit computing and want to understand what makes a suitable platform to run Presentation Server 4.0 x64.
