As a wholly owned subsidiary of China Energy Group, Shenhua Railway Transportation Co., Ltd. specializes in the maintenance and leasing of locomotives and freight cars, and the maintenance and repair of railway lines. It manages more than 50,000 railway trucks and hundreds of other rolling stock assets, worth a total of more than 25 billion yuan (US $3.69 billion).
To keep its railways running smoothly, the company follows a planned preventive maintenance schedule that involves daily inspections and regular overhauls for all its freight cars. However, as technology has improved and vehicle parts have become more reliable, the company found that it was often spending time and money inspecting cars that did not need maintenance.
The company wanted to take a smarter approach: by monitoring the condition of each asset in real time, it would be able to assess when maintenance was necessary, and even predict and prevent failures before they happen. To deliver this comprehensive transformation of its maintenance strategy, the company established an innovation project known as "Shenhua Heavy-Duty Railway Freight Car State Maintenance Technology Research and Equipment Development".
