Thirty years ago, IBM was recognized as the industry leader, built on engineering excellence and inspiring innovation. For IBM and Lenovo, the innovation catalyst always starts with customer requirements. The notion, “Nobody ever got fired for buying an IBM," became a reality in the corporate sector.
With the introduction of the PS/2 Server in 1992, IBM made significant inroads in supporting enterprise customers, where customer requirements such as reliability, ease of maintenance, and strong corporate support were a mandate. In addition to running the PS/2 from off-the-shelf x86 CPUs, many PS/2 innovations, such as the standard serial port, 3.5-inch floppy disk format, 72-pin SIMMs, the PS/2 port, and the VGA video, all went on to become industry standards.
Over the years, the PS/2 family evolved into PC Server, Netfinity, xSeries, and then to the System x line of x86 servers produced by IBM and later acquired by Lenovo in 2014. Lenovo rebranded the IBM System x servers to Lenovo System x, and in 2016, Lenovo announced the ThinkSystem servers which continues the legacy of innovation excellence.
